prep_maths_shape.jpgOur aim is to give each pupil the solid foundation of numeracy, mental and applied mathematical skills which will give them confidence in the subject and an understanding to carry to other parts of the curriculum and areas of their lives.

We broadly follow the National Numeracy Strategy for KS1 and KS2. Mathematics is taught on a daily basis. Topics are taught as whole class lessons with children working individually or in pairs or groups in order to cover different learning experiences and strategies. Carefully planned and structured lessons introduce numeracy through practical, mental and written activities, differentiated according to age and ability.

It is essential that children make sense of what they are being taught in order to develop a sound understanding of the subject. The core mathematics scheme that we use is supplemented as necessary and CD ROMS are used to provide additional stimulus. All curriculum areas provide opportunities to expand and explore mathematical concepts.  An emphasis is placed on role- play in realistic situations, to reinforce the relevance and understanding of what can appear somewhat abstract concepts, so developing confidence and enjoyment.

Rote learning is still important and the learning of tables begins at this stage. Parents are encouraged to develop, practise and extend any ‘numeracy" opportunity' at home.
