The Prep School held a specially Chinese themed programme of activities with arts and crafts including making masks, cards, Chinese symbols and a Chinese meal for lunch.
Academic Principal Emma Jones said: “Celebrating the Chinese New Year has become part of the calendar here at Howells and with this being the Year of the Dragon there is a special affinity between China and Wales.
“We do also draw many pupils from the Far East and from Hong Kong and Singapore in particular so it is a special time for us here at Howells.
“We also believe in letting the girls experience as many different cultures as we can as part of their learning experience here”

The preparatory school at Howell’s has recently reinstated
the ancient language of Latin to the curriculum. Girls in J1, J2, J3 and J4
have been studying the roman language this term. Dr Molinari is gently
introducing the girls into this subject using bright and interactive lessons. Among
those learning Latin are Anna Pydiah, from Halkyn, and Tilly Buckley, from
Mold, and Tilly said: “It’s a lot of fun and we’re learning lots of different
words and sentences.” Anna added: “It’s very interesting and we’re learning
about Romulus
and Remus.”
The subject is very useful for the girls as it is the basis
of most European modern languages. Understanding where words and phrases originated
will facilitate learning for the girls through many different subjects such as
French, Italian and even Maths!
Emma Jones said:
“After many years of being on the decline people have realised it’s actually
very good to learn Latin as it opens up so many avenues for pupils.
“We have introduced it for seven-year-olds because younger
age groups are able to learn languages much more quickly and better.
“It’s definitely
useful for those learning languages because so many words in European languages
come from Latin, even in Welsh, and it’s good for those going into the law or
medicine.
“We’re teaching Latin
alongside studies of Classical Civilisation and the ancient Romans, who gave us
the foundation of our calendar, government and law.”
