Howell's was founded in 1859 by the Trustees of Thomas Howell, a cloth merchant who died in Seville leaving a legacy of 12,000 gold ducats for the education of orphaned Welsh maidens. Even today the annual income from this legacy is still used to support some orphan scholars. Although it is rich in history, a school like Howell's can't be an ivory tower if it wants to turn out young adults able to meet the challenges of the modern world. We hope we take the best of the traditional British public school education and blend in a pragmatic approach to the realities of life and careers for the adults of today and tomorrow. If we can do this in a caring and supportive environment, we will continue to produce the compassionate, successful and dynamic young adults who are the true ambassadors of the school.
