" Sensation tells us a thing is, Thinking tells us what this thing is, Feeling tells us what this thing is to us."   Carl Gustav Jung, Psychologist.

The aim of Psychology is to explore the relationship between mind and behaviour; the aim of this department is to promote in students an understanding of and enthusiasm for our subject.

Psychology is available at AS and A2 level. Whilst classified as a Science the skills required are drawn from both the Arts and Sciences. The syllabus dictates the outline of the course. Inspiration for discussion and analysis of the theories studied is drawn from as many and varied sources as possible, including news, films, fiction, non-fiction and of course students' personal experience and observation. It is the application of principles, demonstrating their relevance to their own lives that stimulates students.

The study of theories and research and the development of their own psychological investigations require students to apply scientific methodology. Skills, particularly ICT capabilities associated with research (data capture and handling, analysis, interpretation and evaluation) are all developed throughout the course. Much debate is philosophical by nature and students are encouraged to challenge information, think critically and argue coherently. Furthermore, the study of Psychology will provide students with insight not only into the behaviour of others but also into their own. Self- awareness makes better friends, citizens, employees and individuals of us all.

It is therefore not surprising that the study of Psychology at both A level and degree level is growing rapidly and that it is acknowledged as a ‘holistic' subject, with much to offer.

The subject is divided into three modules for each A Level year; one core exam, one options exam and one experiment-based coursework report based on the design of a psychological investigation.
