Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) at Howell's is a compulsory, non-examined programme for all students in years 7-9. It is reinforced across the curriculum, through the enrichment programme and schemes such as Duke of Edinburgh Award. The aim of the programme is to give students the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead happy, healthy, confident and independent lives. Generally it is the Form Tutors who are responsible for the programme, which is timetabled as a weekly 30 minute lesson. They will aim to provide a forum in which to discuss, in a non-judgemental atmosphere, issues affecting students and their peers. Such topics as:
The tutors have a variety of resources available to them which may include cds, games, models and presentations. Specific elements of the programme such as drug awareness may draw on external agencies. The programme aims to deliver factual information alongside skills. Citizenship is about enjoying rights and exercising responsibilities within the School and wider community in which we belong. Students will study the rights, responsibilities and duties of citizens within the context of various forms of government and the legal system. Students are encouraged to develop logical arguments and to distinguish between the subjective and objective, opinion and evidence. The programme complements other areas of the curriculum, notably RE and the Humanities. Sex and Relationship Education is taught by the school nurse. We aim to encourage pupils to make informed choices, and to consider the consequences of their actions. We strive to foster positive attitudes and feelings and develop assertiveness skills which help them to resist undue pressure and improve the quality of their decision making process. |
