The aim of the department is to provide opportunities for every student to develop through physical activity by delivering a comprehensive, balanced range of activities and experiences in which to participate, progress and enjoy.

Sport promotes not only physical but also emotional, cognitive and social development. At Howells we consider Sport to be an important element in the general education of all students; in years 7 to 9 four lessons per week are devoted to PE. In the GCSE years 10 and 11 two lessons are allocated.

By the end of year 11 all students should demonstrate:

  • An awareness of the relationship between participation in sport and the associated health and fitness benefits.
  • Improved personal fitness, motor skills and tactical awareness, thereby promoting confidence.
  • Development of those social skills associated with working effectively as part of a group or team, together with leadership qualities.
  • Emotional development, learning tolerance and appreciation of their own and others strengths and weaknesses.

We consider that we will have achieved our aim if we have provided the student with a purposeful leisure pursuit, leading to an active and healthy lifestyle beyond their years at Howells.
