It is our aim that all students should have the opportunity to develop their potential as musicians during their time at the School and leave here with a love of music, whether classical, jazz, rock or pop.

Music is an integral part of the life of the school. It is a compulsory curriculum subject in years 7 - 9 and many students play at least one musical instrument. Individual tuition is available on a wide range of instruments and we have a number of practice rooms as well as a recording studio. Howell's has a long-standing tradition of choral singing and voice lessons are also available.

All students are given the chance to participate in music and there are many opportunities to perform. It is not, however, necessary to be an outstanding musician to enjoy and succeed in this subject. The school curriculum in years 7 - 9 introduces the girls to many different musical traditions and cultures giving them the opportunity to experience music in many forms and to create their own compositions.  The department works closely with the Performing Arts Programme.

Those who can perform to a standard of Grade 3 and above, vocally or instrumentally are suitable candidates to pursue Music as an option at GCSE and at Grade 6 or above to AS/A2 level.

Music Scholarships are available for particularly talented musicians within the School's Awards Scheme.
