Television, film, radio, cinema, advertising, printed and online material. The media play a significant role in our daily lives. The aim of the Media Studies course is to encourage students to critically engage with and evaluate a broad range of mass media output. As a GCSE and A level these are as such primarily academic courses, with a strong emphasis on research, although there are many and varied opportunities to develop practical production skills in filming, editing and website or print design. Initially we focus on television, film, newspapers and magazines in terms of form, content and language. We look behind the media product to the organisations responsible for its creation and we look to the audience to assess its impact. Students are encouraged to discuss and write about their own experiences of, and personal response to the media. Coursework is a significant requirement at both AS and A2. Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of the issues addressed, together with the application of technical skills acquired, through a practical production. Media Studies complements other A Levels such as English Literature, History, Business Studies and Psychology as well as Art and Design and Photography. The skills of critical analysis and awareness acquired through study of the subject will prove invaluable in all areas of life.
