“Do not worry about your problems with mathematics, I assure you mine are far greater.” Albert Einstein, Physicist. There can be no denying that numeracy skills are hugely important across the school curriculum and of course for life beyond school. Mathematics equips students with a powerful language for the communication of ideas; a means to represent, explain and predict. Our aim is to provide our students with the confidence, tools and skills to translate any problem- solving situation into this language. Our approach, therefore, is to emphasise numeracy and the application of mathematical models to practical problems. The teaching staff aim to foster enjoyment and appreciation of their subject, offering encouragement and support whilst delivering a curriculum which aims to challenge at all levels. During the first year basic mathematical skills are first consolidated and then built upon; issues of confidence are addressed. Students are then assessed and placed into sets for year 8 - 11, in order that specific needs can be better met, be that one to one tuition or extension work. Progress thereafter is closely monitored and movement between sets is made as appropriate. All students will take Mathematics GCSE and the subject is offered as an option at AS and A2 level as is Further Mathematics. The school participates in the annual National Mathematics Challenge at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels and our students regularly achieve at Gold, Silver and Bronze award levels.
