The aim of the History department is to inspire a lifelong interest in History together with an appreciation of its importance. As historians we are concerned with all aspects of the vast body of human experience; political, economic, cultural, social and religious. In the course of our studies we analyse and evaluate critically the evidence available to us in order to better understand the why and how of where we are today. History is a compulsory curriculum subject in years 7 - 9. Our syllabus broadly follows the National Curriculum and aims to make History accessible and exciting in the firm belief that enjoyment and achievement maximises potential. A wide range of teaching and learning strategies is adopted and full use is made of resources such as the Internet, CD ROMs and our locality. Assignments involve research and the application and development of writing skills and range from essays to group projects to role- play. By the end of year 9 students will be equipped with the tools that they need to take the subject on to GCSE level and beyond. Regardless of whether they choose to do so we hope that they will have gained a grasp of the fact that the past is there to be explored, thoughtfully and imaginatively and through its study there is much to be learnt; about humanity and its struggles and achievements, about precedents for present day crises and their resolutions. History is an option at GCSE, AS and A2 levels. |
