english_words.jpg"The limits of my language means the limits of my world." Ludwig Wittgenstein, Philosopher.

English is considered to be one of the most important subjects on the curriculum. Written and spoken language are vital for the communication of knowledge, as such English is important across the curriculum. It is the aim of this department to promote literacy and the enjoyment of literature. Our approach is to develop as fully as possible each student's competence and confidence in the key skills of reading and writing, speaking and listening.

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." Sir Richard Steele,Author and Politician.

Reading is central to the development of the student as an informed, imaginative individual and all are encouraged to enjoy as wide a range of texts and books as possible. The literature that we study will include fiction and non-fiction, classical and modern and is drawn from a rich variety of written, spoken and visual sources. Through the analysis of such texts we aim to develop critical judgement and actively promote self- expression through discussion of character, opinions, ideas, thoughts and feelings.

"The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean." Robert Louis Stevenson, Author.

An accomplished writer is one who can communicate effectively, that is to say express themselves and their ideas articulately and with confidence. Students are encouraged to produce their own writing and to experiment with style and technique.

"The inarticulate speak longest." Japanese proverb.

In the course of our studies opportunities naturally arise for students to speak and to listen through their participation in readings, discussion and debate. As a department we are enthusiastic contributers to the Performing Arts Programme, which encompasses music, drama and dance and is compulsory in years 7-9.  During these years students are also required to prepare for the English Speaking Board exams, though they may elect not to take the exam itself. A large number of students also take the LAMDA examinations with great success.

English Language is compulsory at GCSE, Literature or Drama are available as options.  All are options at AS/A2 level.
