English as an additional language (EAL) Print E-mail
eal_workbook.jpg"If the English language made any sense, lackadaisical would have something to do with a shortage of flowers." Doug Larson, Middle Distance Runner.

Howell's provides all students for whom English is not their first language with tailor-made EAL lessons. Our aim is to enable such students to reach a level of proficiency in the language related  skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening required by the school.

Following an initial assessment in the four skills students are placed in small groups according to ability, and specific courses are designed to meet their individual needs. Generally this will involve tutoring in those lessons where the student's academic English does not allow for acceptable progress in that subject. Timetabling for EAL is determined by the student's individual timetable and availability

Within the lessons the EAL course will provide the students with the tools they need to build up their confidence in the language, create or improve their interaction with English speakers and react confidently to familiar and unfamiliar cues and situations. Progress is monitored via feedback from tutors and subject teachers and regular tests. Internal examinations are set at the end of each academic year.

As the students' ability to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing improves so their involvement in class increases and they become more active participants. They gain a better understanding of the subject matter and can deal more effectively with assignments, homework and examinations.

IGCSE English as a second language is offered at the end of year 11.  IGCSE at grade C and above is accepted by many Universities as proof of competency for the purpose of undergraduate study.

Progression to International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in the Sixth Form is recommended with the aim of achieving a minimum 6.5 grade. This qualification is recognised across the English speaking world by  Universities, Employers and Professional bodies and as such is an important tool for educational and employment prospects.

EAL lessons incur additional costs and therefore fees.
