“Why is it that with all the information
available today on how to be successful in small business, so few people really
are? “Michael Gerber,Emyth Business Consultant
All businesses are different; their diverse internal organisations and the economic, political and social environments in which they operate create exciting challenges. The aim of the Business Studies course is to promote an understanding of the demands of business and communicate a sense of its excitement and dynamism to students. At both AS and A2 level the course content will satisfy more academic students. Writing skills, the ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely, are as essential to any candidate as they are to a manager. The syllabus also includes a significant element of hands-on practical work, in the form of case studies and management exercises. Students experience decision-making processes, applying scientific analysis techniques to arrive at an outcome. A range of specific business concepts, theories and practical skills is developed; ICT forms an integral part of the course and students will master a wide range of applications software. Whilst some study is teacher led, it is anticipated that, as they progress, students will work either independently and/or in groups as appropriate, to gain most from the course. A responsible attitude towards coursework is thus essential. The department subscribes to a range of journals and quality papers and students are expected to show some interest in these and relevant television programmes. It is also anticipated that sixth-formers will participate in the Young Enterprise scheme. In the course of their studies our students will enhance existing skills and develop valuable new skills, relevant to further studies and life beyond; decision-making, problem-solving, exercising initiative, self-motivation and team work. As a subject Business Studies bridges the disciplines of the Arts and the Sciences and successfully partners and complements either.
