biology living.jpg“Biology has at least 50 more interesting years”.James D. Watson, American Geneticist

Biology is the study of life and of living organisms. The aim of our department is to stimulate curiosity about and enjoyment in the living world, together with concern for the care of the environment. Biology has always been relevant; the modern curriculum highlights the relevance of the biologist's role in scientific development and advancement in the 21st century, controversial and challenging topics such as AIDS, GM foods, the Human Genome Project, global warming.

Each staff member is based in their own laboratory and is  better able, therefore, to create a stimulating working environment. Students are encouraged, as far as possible, to explore biology hands-on through investigative laboratory work. We make full use of the latest subject specific software to enhance the students' understanding of new concepts. This approach makes biology accessible and rewarding across the range of ability; differentiated tasks challenge the more able.

In years 7 - 9 students progress through Spotlight Science to KS3. Towards the end of year 9 we have recently started to introduce the GCSE curriculum.

Biology may be studied at both AS and A2 level.
