“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an
artist once he grows up.” Pablo Picasso.
At Howells we regard Art as an important element in the general education of all students; for the first three years it is a part of the curriculum. Students acquire skills, experiences and knowledge through working with a broad range of two and three-dimensional media. These will include drawing and painting, printmaking, sculptural modelling, pottery and photography. Students are encouraged to relate to the work of other artists and to develop their critical faculties. A dedicated ICT area enables access to a wealth of material via the internet, supplementing the departmental library and further providing for the study of digital art, photography and computer aided design. Visits are organised to the excellent art galleries in Liverpool and Manchester. Art and Design thereafter is studied as an optional choice to GCSE level and can be continued further to AS/A2 level. An art related club is regularly on offer as an enrichment activity.
