Career
Education and Guidance at Howell's is provided by a dedicated Careers
Co-ordinator. Most students will not have determined their chosen career prior
to choosing GCSE options, but it is important that they are introduced to the
concept of career management and prepared for the decision making processes
ahead.
Students
are introduced to the careers facilities in year 9. Careers Wales visits the
school and identifies broad areas of potential interest for individuals using
age appropriate computer software.
In
Years 10 and 11, all pupils take part in COA's Preview programme. Preview is
based on an interests questionnaire which generates a personal report for each
pupil, focusing on possible career paths and A level options. The Careers
Co-ordinator supports pupils through the process of choosing A levels,
following an Options Evening, and helps them to prepare for work experience
week - which takes place immediately after GCSE examinations. During their time in the Sixth Form students will attend a careers convention, providing them an opportunity to attend seminars led by professionals from a wide range of occupations and organisations. A Gap Fair also provides the opportunity for students to consider activities they might undertake during their Gap year. Opportunities to improve application skills and interview techniques are provided by an annual Interview Day for Year 12 pupils and mock university interview practice is offered to Year 13 pupils. Advice on progressing to higher education is provided by Departmental Heads. Useful links: http://www.trotman.co.uk/ |
