Boarding is a positive step in the growing-up process. It is a
bridge between dependence, and independence. For some girls, especially
where their family is based overseas, boarding can begin at 7 years
old, but for most girls boarding begins at ages 11-14.
For some parents boarding is a requirement of their lifestyle - UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan's daughter boarded at Howell's. For most
parents boarding is a choice they make, a decision to give their
daughters the freedom to develop academically and culturally in a
caring and friendly environment.
Entrusting their girls to our
care gives parents more freedom for career development, and for time
together. The time they spend with their daughters is then genuine
quality time.
Caring is a 24-hour
process, and we aim to ensure each girl feels emotionally secure and
personally cared-for. To achieve this our house-mistresses (house
mothers) have no teaching responsibilities and are entirely devoted to
the pastoral care of each girl. Our house staff form a key part in a
'care team' that also includes the school GP, nursing staff, and Senior
Mistress (from the teaching staff).
Our house staff prepare breakfast 'in-house' for the girls each
morning and provide all cleaning and personal laundry services up until
4th year, when girls take over responsibility for their own laundry.
Additional staff assist with indoor and outdoor games and activities
each evening.
