Howell’s School pupils joined a cast of singers and musicians at the school’s on-site Recording Studio in October to record a special charity song and video.
The charity single is the idea of music company Inscreen Records and they have chosen to use unsigned artists to cut a new version of the song Iridescent by US supergroup LinkinPark to raise money for the communities devastated by the recent inner city riots.
Congratulations to Anna Harrison and Ruth Ng who thrilled everyone by winning the regional heat of the Debating Competition this week. Their topic was "Increasing Immigration" and they not only won their debate, but were also chosen as overall winners from the 8 teams by the judges. Previous winners have been Denbigh High School, Dinas Bran, and Elfed High School. The trophy is a fabulous metal red dragon. The girls will now compete at the next heat later in the year to be held in Powys.
L6 Engineering Challenge
Eleven girls from the Lower Sixth took part in an Engineering Challenge at DeesideCollege on Tuesday 4th October, 2011.The girls were divided into teams of 3 or 4 mixed with pupils from other schools to complete the challenge. They had to use electric motors and K-nex kits to build a working model of a cable spinning machine. In real life, such machines make electricity cables from many strands of copper wire in order to carry high currents in, for example, the National Grid. The models used reels of cotton instead of wire, but still needed to twist 4 strands together and then wind it round a drum. The teams were also judged on their costings and the footprint of the final machine. All the 48 teams taking part succeeded in at least one aspect of this challenge and each team came up with a different solution. Although none of our girls were in the winning teams, they all showed good teamworking and problem solving skills and should be very proud of their efforts. It was the hardest challenge since the introduction of this annual competition.
A Level Results Day
Students and staff at Howell's School are once again celebrating an exceptional set of A Level and AS results this year. The pass rate at A level was 100% with 92% of pupils gaining higher grade passes, including a number of pupils achieving a prestigious A* grade.
Pupils continue to perform well across the range of academic subjects offered by the school.
Miss Emma Jones, said that the results are a reflection of the ability and commitment that the girls have put into their studies and of the hardwork and dedication of all of the staff at Howell’s School this year.
